Shopping in Keswick

Outdoor Retailer of the UK

Compact streets made for browsing, independent shops selling antiques, books, pottery and local food — and a choice of outdoor kit second to none.

A town built for browsing

Keswick’s compact streets, in the northern Lake District, are ideal for browsing and make a pleasant change from the larger towns and cities. You will find everything from your daily requirements to that elusive special gift to take home.

There are many independent shops offering antiques, books, paintings and pottery, jewellery, speciality foods and local produce, as well as clothes, gifts and traditional toys. There are supermarkets in Keswick and in Cockermouth, and many of the smallest villages have well-stocked general stores for day-to-day needs.

Outdoor kit

Outdoor kit

The choice of outdoor clothing and equipment retailers in Keswick is second to none, earning it the title of Outdoor Retailer of the UK if not Europe.

Which is convenient, given how much of the town’s reason for being is up a hill. If you are heading out, safety on the fells covers what you actually need.

Keswick’s Bohemian Quarter

Walk out of the top left corner of the Market Square and up St John’s Street, and you are in Keswick’s Bohemian Quarter: twenty-six locally owned, independent businesses just off the busy pedestrian centre.

It is a street for browsing, with art galleries, vintage and antique shops, collectables and vinyl, boho clothing, and gifts designed or made in the Lake District, and cafes, a pub, restaurants and salons in between. Call in at Viridian Gallery on the way up, and finish at the Keswick Alhambra, the town’s vintage-chic cinema.
