The summit is not visible from Keswick, but one of the best routes up starts from Seathwaite Farm at the head of [Borrowdale](https://visitkeswick.com/explore/valleys/borrowdale) . Although it is only about nine miles, do not expect an easy day’s walk. In poor visibility it is easy to stray onto dangerous ground, and you will need accurate use of map and compass. If in doubt, join an organised group or hire a guide for the day. Pick out a rock climber on the cliffs of Scafell — at 964 metres, only fourteen below where you stand. Keswick and Skiddaw far to the north. Great Gable one way and Bowfell the other. And a long way off, Morecambe Bay, the Isle of Man and south-west Scotland. ## Before you park at Seathwaite ### The roadside fills up Seathwaite is a very popular place to park for the central fells, including Scafell Pike and Great Gable. At busy times this causes access problems for people who live and work there — including farmers, and potentially emergency vehicles. ### The test to apply If you arrive and cannot park without being confident that a fire engine or a tractor and trailer could still get past, please use one of the alternatives instead.
